SAMMY HAGAR Has No Plans To Retire Anytime Soon
May 7, 2019During an appearance on yesterday's (Monday, May 6) edition of "Trunk Nation LA Invasion: Live From The Rainbow Bar & Grill" on SiriusXM, Sammy Hagar was asked if he thought he would still be working this hard when he is in his early 70s. "Absolutely not," he responded (hear audio below). "And it's not hard work, by the way. It used to be hard work when you were trying. When I was trying to make it, it wasn't work then to me, but looking back, that's when I was really working hard. Now it just comes so natural. I would rather do it than other job that I can possibly think of. But I don't look at it as a job.
"I've tried to quit," he admitted. "Before I joined VAN HALEN in '84, when I cut my hair off, I was thinking about, 'Yeah, maybe I'll do one more record after 'VOA' and retire. I really thought that way back then. The marriage I was in, my wife hated my career and hated me going away and hated me working all the time, and I was thinking, 'Maybe I'll just settle down and raise my kids.' And now, it's, like, everybody's saying, 'When are you gonna quit? When do you think you're gonna say, 'Well, that's enough'?' Well, I don't know. Because it's not right now. I'm think I'm as good as I've ever been. And I'm not bragging — I'm just saying. And if I felt like I didn't have it, if I walked out on stage and didn't have it, and I've seen plenty of people like that, I probably would stop — I mean, I really would. I don't think I would do it anymore if I would start embarrassing myself. So you all let me know."
Following a pair of influential albums with MONTROSE, Hagar left a successful solo career to join VAN HALEN. After leaving the group, he relaunched that solo career.
THE CIRCLE, Hagar's critically acclaimed supergroup also featuring Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson, will release its first album of all-original material, "Space Between", on May 10 via BMG.
SAMMY HAGAR & THE CIRCLE kicked off its 23-city North American on April 19 in Reno, Nevada and will end it on June 7 in Chicago, Illinois.
